A Presbyterian minister from New Haven, Connecticut Lyman Beecher had strong liberal beliefs that were rare for his time. Beecher was president of the newly established Lane Theological Seminary at Walnut Hills, Cincinnati, and was professor of didactic and polemic theology at the seminary also.
